As part of Melbourne’s ongoing transformation of its rail network, Pakenham Station has been reimagined as a modern, accessible, and durable transport hub. Designed by Genton Architecture, the new station forms part of the state’s level crossing removal program; a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving commuter safety, capacity, and connectivity.

Central to the project’s visual identity and long-term performance is the use of Agrob Buchtal’s Keratwin ceramic façade system, installed on the station platform by trusted industry specialists Ceramic Solutions. Known for its technical superiority and refined finish, Keratwin was selected in a 300x600mm panel size, in a black matte grid format, creating a sleek, durable surface that complements the station’s contemporary architectural language.

In an environment as demanding as a railway station platform, material performance is non-negotiable. Subjected to constant foot traffic, UV exposure, weather extremes, and the risk of vandalism, every façade element must be engineered to last. Keratwin is considered the premier ceramic cladding system in the terracotta façade space, offering exceptional resistance to impact, scratching, and fading, making it ideally suited to high-traffic public infrastructure.

A standout feature of this installation is the Hytect finish, Agrob Buchtal’s innovative photocatalytic surface treatment. For transit environments, Hytect offers significant long-term benefits. The self-cleaning properties reduce maintenance demands by using rainwater to naturally wash away dirt and organic material. Its antibacterial functionality helps to prevent the buildup of grime and pathogens on surfaces, a critical advantage in public settings. Importantly, Hytect also contributes to better air quality. By breaking down harmful pollutants on contact, the surface actively purifies the air around the station, improving the microclimate for commuters and passersby. Additionally, the graffiti-resistant properties of the Hytect finish allow for easier and less invasive cleaning, reducing the need for harsh chemicals and costly maintenance interventions. The modular format of the Keratwin system also made it well-suited to the fast-paced and coordinated construction schedule typical of rail infrastructure projects. Ceramic Solutions’ installation ensured that the system was integrated with precision, meeting the project’s architectural goals while maintaining tight control over quality and timing. From a design perspective, the black matte grid format used on the Pakenham Station platform brings a clean, graphic element to the space, reinforcing the station’s role as both a practical facility and a visual landmark within the upgraded rail corridor.
