What’s all this talk about Caribbean Colonial ?

We drop into Kate Walker’s coastal pad to find the origin of this hot new trend.

When Kate Walker, of KWD fame, purchased a 40-year-old property in Mt Martha, her imagination ran wild as she envisioned what the unassuming 2000 square metre block could become. She needed to create a concept that could be easily communicated to her design team so they could run with it like they would for any client. â€Caribbean Colonial’ was born, the style coined by Kate, is a fusion of a relaxed Bahamas resort and a sense of history and curation seen with British Colonial decor. Caribbean Colonial is that feeling you get when you walk into a resort lobby to check in and you know you are finally on holidays.

Kate knew from the outset the exterior spaces were going to be an integral part of bringing her vision to life. With pink umbrella’s, a glamourous cocktail deck, lofty tropical palms and one of the most inviting pools we have seen, there is a balance between lux and lax. Kate and her design team have nailed the Caribbean Colonial design brief.  Welcome to Biscayne, we invite you to explore Kate’s house and garden for yourself.

Kate, how important is the Swimming pool?

A swimming pool is the heart of an outdoor space, so wherever possible and if budget allows, we always recommend installing a concrete fully tiled underground pool. And selecting the right pool specialist is so important, to ensure the process is smooth and stress free and that you have the pool you have always dreamed of”

Tell us how you chose the perfect tile for your Caribbean Colonial dream pool?

“We knew we needed just the right shade of aquamarine for the pool tile – one of my absolute favourite colours – and we searched high and low for the perfect colour. We finally found the exact shade at Klay Tiles – they have such an amazing array of tiles to choose from and helped us to find the perfect shade, which is now known as â€Biscayne Blue'”

German made Amano Ice Blue (or Kate calls it Biscayne Blue) is part of our premium mosaic range.  Kate is as big on how a surface feels as much as how it looks; The Amano mosaic tiles passes her tactility test because it literally feels silky underfoot, making it superior to any alternative.  You could say Kate knows a thing or two about tiles, having worked in the tile industry for 15 years prior to become a designer.
