Macksville District Hospital

Education & Health

Macksville is a small town along the Pacific Highway in New South Wales, half way between Sydney and Brisbane. Located in the Nambucca Valley, known for its amazing climate and supported by agriculture and tourism, the town is a short 40 minutes drive south of Coffs Harbour and one hours drive north of Port Macquarie.

In response to the community complex health needs, owing to a large proportion of aged and Aboriginal people in the region, the New South Wales government committed necessary funding to make this project a reality. STH Architects were tasked with the challenge of designing a facility capable of housing a 42 bed level C2 facility including emergency, community health, operating theatres, maternity and inpatient units.

KLAY was the proud supplier of Agrob Buchtal Keratwin non-combustible façade panels for the project. The façade design incorporated approximately 2000m2 of KeraTwin 410 Cream 1492x305mm and KeraTwin 411 Ochre 1492x305mm façade cladding panels laid in a horizontal stack bond pattern with colour changes creating a multi hued geometric pallet.

In addition to its non-combustibility, STH Architects chose the product for its self-cleaning and anti-bacterial properties afforded by the inclusion of HytectTM. The proprietary system Hytect operates on the basis of a photocatalytic process using titanium dioxide baked into the surface of each ceramic panel at high temperatures, which in turn reacts with sunlight in order to release active oxygen. The facade solution requires little to no cleaning or maintenance and offers the side benefit of neutralising air pollutants by virtue of the Hytect surface.

Macksville District Hospital completed on a fast-track basis in readiness for the COVID19 threat in March 2020 over a period of six weeks demonstrating another of the products features – rapid installation. With a decades long design life, evidenced by Agrob Buchtal past projects in Europe, the Macksville District Hospital will continue serving the community for many generations to come.
